What if they won’t talk to me?

My teenage daughter is self-harming, but every time I try and talk to her, she changes the subject. How can I get her to open up to me? Thanks

  • I wonder how you found out - whether she told you or you guessed? Take it slowly; pushing the subject will add to the tension between you; find things you can talk about and enjoy together - the more relaxed she feels the more likely she is to open up in her time. try not to make the focus of your relationship about her self-harm.
Non verbal ways of communicating are really important -song lyrics that mean something to her, text messages, cooking her favourite meal - anything that shows her you are in this together and you are ready when she is. x
